It’s Veganuary – the month when vegan food and lifestyle choices are in the spotlight. It’s also a time for manufacturers and formulators to review how their products fare in response to a growing trend.
Reports indicate that interest in veganism has grown by around 500% in the past five years and, in 2019, the vegan UK market was worth nearly £600m according to Mintel. Cementing suggestions that veganism is more than a passing fad, The Economist declared last year to be the year of the vegan.
What was once viewed as an alternative lifestyle choice is moving mainstream and it’s not simply food producers who should be watching. The Vegan Society defines veganism as a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.
It’s no surprise therefore that the cosmetics and personal care industry is taking note. In its report of the growth of the global vegan cosmetics market, Technavio identified expected year-on-year growth of nearly 6% to 2023, nearly half of which will come from Europe.
