Nano-structured formulations have emerged as a promising strategy for stabilising retinol, safeguarding it during handling and storage in cosmetic product development.
Retinol, a form of Vitamin A, is widely seen as a beneficial ingredient for skin health. It plays a crucial role in the restoration and renewal of cells, essential for skin growth, differentiation and keratinization. However, as a lipophilic active ingredient, retinol has low solubility in water and is susceptible to light and heat.
Encapsulation of retinol extends product effectiveness by stabilising the ingredient for improved skin penetration and gradual release. It also mitigates irritant responses. In our principal NanoScoping’s formulation, available from Blagden, retinol is incorporated into lipid-encapsulated nano colloidal systems. The effect is to improve skin penetration and controlled release, thereby extending the product's effectiveness.
The encapsulation process not only enhances the efficacy of retinol on the skin but also mitigates irritant responses. It allows easy dispersibility in water, enabling incorporation into oil-in-water emulsions, gels, and lotions, resulting in a pleasing cosmetic feel.
