Calcium carbonate is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an inert filler for tablets and for bulking liquid medicines, ointments or creams.

Powdered calcium carbonate is also used as dietary calcium, particularly in liquid products, where the small particle size is useful, and as a viscosity aid and mild abrasive agent in toothpaste.
